The Whole Food Philosophy And The Tale Of A Giant Sugar Beet

While contemplating the whole food philosophy principles I'm learning about, I recalled one of the tales I grew up with. It's an old little tale that, in its own way, illustrates the significance of synergy. And because it's the weekend, and we could all use a break from thinking too hard, here goes....

The Tale of a Giant Sugar Beet

Once upon a time, there lived a grandpa and a grandma.

One day the grandpa decided to plant a sugar beet. He got the field ready, fertilized it, watered it, and took care of it, The sugar beet grew and grew and became huge.

When it came time to harvest it, he tried to pull it out.

He pulled and pulled ... but could not do it.

So he called grandma for help. Grandma came and grandpa grabbed the sugar beet, grandma grabbed grandpa, and they pulled and pulled ... but couldn't pull it out.

So grandma called their granddaughter to help them out. The granddaughter came and grandpa grabbed the sugar beet, grandma grabbed grandpa, granddaughter grabbed grandma, and they pulled, and pulled ... but couldn't pull it out.

So the granddaughter called their dog to come to help. The dog came and grandpa grabbed the sugar beet, grandma grabbed grandpa, granddaughter grabbed grandma, the dog grabbed the granddaughter's skirt, and they pulled, and pulled ... but couldn't pull it out.

So the dog called their cat to come and help. The cat came and grandpa grabbed the sugar beet, grandma grabbed grandpa, granddaughter grabbed grandma, the dog grabbed the granddaughter's skirt, the cat grabbed the dog, and they pulled, and pulled ... but couldn't pull it out.

So the cat called a mouse to come and help them out. The mouse came and grandpa grabbed the sugar beet, grandma grabbed grandpa, granddaughter grabbed grandma, the dog grabbed the granddaughter's skirt, the cat grabbed the dog,  the mouse grabbed the cat's tail ... and they pulled, and pulled ...

and suddenly the beet came out of the ground.

The moral of the story? It took the entire household to get the job done. And even the mouse, however little she was. They couldn't have done it without her.

Perhaps something to consider when deciding between whole foods and counting nutritional isolates for your dog.

  1. BRILLIANT! We are HUGE whole food advocates at Casa de Kolchak. We love eating all sorts of foods and varying what foods the humans and the dogs get. We feel far healthier this way than when we just toss back a handful of supplements!
